Healing Benefits of the 6 tastes

Ayurveda states that the human body, like every other form of creation, is made from the 5 elements – Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Likewise the 6 defined tastes have their origin from the elements, predominantly the Water element, and they each have their own healing ability over the Doshas (Vata, Pitta & Kapha). Ayurvedic medicine works in such a way, that similarity causes increase, and dissimilarity causes decrease. With an understanding of this, the body can be healed once we identify what Dosha is increased or decreased, and then restore balance with the food and medicines we consume.

So here are a few healing properties of the tastes, to maintain homeostasis. All 6 tastes should be taken daily with every meal. The amount of each taste should vary according to a person’s Prakruti (constitution) and state of Doshic balance.
